I'm (Back) on the Air!
Way back in middle school, at my uncle's encouragement, I studied for and got an amateur “ham” radio license. Learning about the math and science behind radio was a lot of fun, and I still remember most of what I learned then about Ohm's law, the frequency/wavelength ratio, and the tiniest bit of morse code.
I let my amateur license expire several years ago, but the hobbyist interest in radio has never really gone away. I still enjoy messing with radio scanners and learning how different communications we take for granted (cell phones, anyone?) work under the hood.
A few days ago, I discovered GMRS, a much more accessible license with limited spectrum access that's slightly better than what you can get with those walkie-talkies you can buy anywhere. There’s no test, it’s $35, and the license lasts 10 years. Why not?
So now I’m back on the airwaves again, still probably doing more listening than talking 😁
